The four-mile Lee Tunnel- London's deepest tunnel ever, will prevent 16 million tons of sewage entering the River each year. At the end of the tunnel is the Beckton Pumping Station, which is part of Britain's largest waste water and sewage treatment plant. A total of 6 KSB pump sets will be installed in a shaft structure 85 meters below the Beckton pumping station and will be used to transport combined stormwater and sewage.
Wear-resistant white cast iron for waste water pumps
6,600 volt motors rated at 3.4 MW and controlled by frequency inverters will be used to drive the waste water pumps. To keep these motors cool, KSB will deploy heat exchangers specially engineered for this underground application. Compared with equivalent air-cooled systems, these heat exchangers will markedly reduce the amount of energy required to dissipate the thermal load. The white cast iron makes the waste water pumps wear-resistant and ensures a long service life.
